Summer is quickly passing by. With a hint of Fall into the air the desire to curl up on the old familiar couch, with a soothing cup of tea and a wonderful book, starts to kick-in.  To facilitate such an inclination of body and soul, here are some suggestions.

"The Hangman's Daughter" by Oliver Potzsch. If you like dark, gothic mysteries, you will love this one. Hanging executions are described with accurate, almost scientific precision. The plot involves questionable rituals and witchcraft. Written by  the descendant of a real life executioner, this book will give you chills and a sense of foreboding. Generally, I like stories with a less depressing feeling hanging from each page. While I have to admit having enjoyed some of the dark humor here and there, in the end it was a bit too much for my little, optimistic soul.  As a result, I did not finish to read this tome. However, it is well written, has a good plot and will fascinate readers with a stronger stomach.

"Earthly Remains" by Donna Leon.  Love Donna Leon Venetian mysteries.  I like Commissario Brunetti, a man committed to his profession, his wife Paola and his very much Italian family. This volume is the twenty-sixth in the series and it finds Brunetti rustling with the harsh, demanding reality of his job.  Venice and its surroundings bring a distinct flavor to the series. Still a good read.

The Fifth Letter by Nicola Moriarty. Four friends meet for a fun wine-filled night. The women engage in a rather absurd game. They dare one another to write anonymous letters spilling their darkest secrets. Later on a fifth letter, full of hatred and rage, surfaces to shatter long standing friendships.  This book is an interesting approach to the study of  friendship and ideals.
