Chadron, July 22, 2008: The City of Chadron will be organizing a Chadron Youth Council (CYC). This organization will civically engage and challenge Chadron's youth. CYC will provide an opportunity to give youth a voice and a chance to identify and solve community issues they face, especially those decisions that directly affect young people.

The Chadron Youth Council will consist of youth ages 7th grade - 20 yrs. There will be 8 - 12 members divided equally between male and female. The CYC will determine (with mentor guidance) the officer structure, bylaws, mission, and expectations, set calender, projects and budget.

The Youth Council will be guided by mentors consisting of a variety of community members.

If you want to make a difference in our community, have a voice for yourself and your peers, and make decisions that will affect young people in Chadron by joining the CYC or becoming a mentor, contact the Chadron City Manager at 234 Main Street or by emailing her below.

Chadron Youth Council Adult Mentor

Recognizing young people are society’s most valuable resource, adult mentors are vital tools for the propagation of future leaders. Mentors must be empathic adults who have not forgotten the struggles and frustrations associated with being young. Mentors must see themselves as guiding consultants, not authoritative decision makers.

Mentors for the Chadron Youth Council will be responsible for providing guidance and structure for the youth members of the council. The council will be comprised of approximately 12 youth ages 13-20 and approximately 12 adult mentors. Mentors must be at least 21 years old. The youth council will be under the direct supervision of the Chadron City Manager. Mentors will meet with the youth council at regularly scheduled meetings, and must be available on a rotating basis to attend city council meetings. Mentors will assist the youth on the council with the development and implementation of a mission statement, vision statement, constitution, and by-laws. Mentors will also provide oversight for a youth controlled budget.

Mentors must be willing and able to work with a diverse group of people from various backgrounds including race, gender, sexual orientation, and income level. Mentors must adhere to a code of confidentiality regarding youth council affairs. Additional roles and duties include but are not limited to: clarifying municipal structure and law, facilitating a creative environment for youth to generate ideas and develop policies, inspiring youth action and involvement, advocating for youth opportunities, mediating member disputes, helping maintain direction and progress, fostering self- esteem and confidence, embodying cooperation and understanding, ensuring fairness and equality.

Background checks will be conducted for all prospective mentors. Applicants will be screened for serious criminal offenses. Applicants need to be residents of Chadron or the immediate surrounding areas. Applications can be picked up at Chadron City Hall located at 234 Main Street or www.chadron-nebraska.com.
