Ordinance 13-209 Public Walks Kept Clean: Snow, Ice and Mud

Snow Removal

Winter is making its presence known with bitter cold temperatures and precipitation in the form of snow and ice. The streets and the sidewalks are becoming covered and we want to take a moment to remind our community members of some new changes to the city ordinance that were passed a few months ago in reference to the removal of snow and ice.

City Ordinance 13-209 states:

§ 13-209  PUBLIC WALKS KEPT CLEAN; SNOW, ICE AND MUD.

It shall be unlawful for the occupant of any lot or lots, or the owner of any vacant lot or lots within the corporate limits of the City to allow snow, sleet, mud, ice, slush or other substance to accumulate on the sidewalk contiguous thereto, or to permit any compacted snow, sleet, ice, mud, or other substance to remain upon the sidewalk or a period of time in excess of twenty-four (24) hours after the cessation of a storm.

Snow removed from non-single family residential private property shall not be placed in or upon the public streets or alleys, except for in the Central Business District of the City, snow from public sidewalks only (not parking lots or other private property) shall be pushed into the gutter of the streets outside the curbline.

The Central Business District includes the 100, 200, 300, and 400 Blocks of Main Street; the 100 and 200 Block of Bordeaux Street; the 100 and 200 Blocks of Chadron Avenue; the 100 and 200 Blocks of Morehead Street; the 100 and 200 Blocks of East Second Street; the 100, 200 and 300 Blocks of West Second Street; the 100 and 200 Blocks of East Third Street and the 100, 200, and 300 Blocks of West Third Street. (Ord. 1000, passed 12-4-1978; Ord. 1416, passed 11-02-2020)  Penalty, see § 13-301

Many people in the community utilize our sidewalks for walking/running and its a matter of safety, to ensure the sidewalks are free and clear of obstructions such as those listed in the ordinance. We would like to ask everyone for their assistance in ensuring their properties are in compliance with City Ordinance 13-209. If anyone has any questions about the new changes to the city ordinance or would like to report a violation call the Chadron Police Department at 308-432-0510.
